My Life as a Colonial Schoolteacher

“Oh,” Hello. My name is Master Meidt.  I am a schoolmaster. I teach in Oxford School. Oh, excuse me; one of the boys in class is misbehaving. Sometimes I use a birch branch to whip them or I would use a ruler or a stick to hit their knuckles or palms. I try to teach them their Numbers, Alphabet and the Lords prayer. I make a horn book by covering this writing with a thin layer of a cow’s horn. This protects the writing. In my classroom most of students are between 6 and 8 years old. I usually have more boys than girls. Only a few of my students come from wealthy families. Most wealthy families hire tutors for their children. The hardest part of my job is getting up at 7 am because that is when school starts. At least, I don’t need to bring in the coal and wood for the fire the children do that. I make them read the Bible and if they didn’t read it and fooled around, I would make them wear a dunce cap or make them put sticks in their nose and mouth for an hour or even more.”Oh” there is someone misbehaving I have to bring the dunce cap.
