Children need to encounter the basic ideas of mathematics that exist in the world around them. In third grade they use a variety of manipulative materials in situations that give meaning to mathematical ideas. They are encouraged to share their ideas with others. We recognize that children need a solid foundation in basic facts and skills to become effective problem solvers. Along with the development of basic facts and skills, problem solving strategies are taught.

The third grade mathematics program stresses fundamental skills. Materials used to supplement the text include base 10 blocks, deans blocks, chips, fraction bars, wrap ups, rods, K-nex's, tiles, decks of cards, dice, and dominoes. Various computer programs enrich our program. The children often practice their skills by playing games such as Krypto, 24, Knock Out, Pay Day, and Chip Trading. We encourage the children to create their own games as well.

Mathematics is taught five times per week in classes that last approximately 45 minutes each. The children may work alone, with a partner, with a small group, or as an entire class. Groups may be created by the teacher or by the children according to the particular topic or problem being covered that day. New topics are introduced by the teacher. Practice is reinforced in class and time is allotted for students to ask questions.

Scope and Sequence
Mathematical Units In The Third Grade Include:

  • Place Value
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Problem Solving
  • The Calculator
  • Measurement
  • Fractions and Decimals
  • Simple Geometry
  • Graphing
  • Estimation

Often, a portion of the children's homework may be related to their study of a particular mathematical topic or problem. We encourage the children to try to complete their homework with as little support as possible and to ask questions of older family members only if they are unsure.

Many mathematical software programs have proven helpful for drill and practice as well as for enrichment. We encourage the children to use the computer as a tool to enrich their learning and understanding of mathematics.
