Our goal is to teach the children to think effectively about the wide range of information they are exposed to in the area of social studies. We strive to teach the children to learn how to find the answers to their many questions. We believe that children must be actively involved in order to form opinions, solve problems, and reflect upon issues and events.

The teaching of social studies centers around several themes. We try to integrate reading, writing, and spelling into our units as much as possible. This year the children will be expected to learn to locate and spell accurately geographical areas throughout this country and the world. Included in our social studies program is the study of current events.

During the second half of the year, third graders apply research skills to a topic of their choosing. Each youngster’s final presentation will reflect his or her knowledge of the research process which includes: selecting a topic, questioning, note taking, outlining, drafting, editing, writing rough and final drafts and producing a bibliography.

The computer and the Internet are useful tools in the area of social studies. We have used programs like Geo Safari and Nigel’s World to enrich the children’s knowledge of geography. We use the Golden Book, Encarta, and World Book Encyclopedias on CD ROM when we are researching a variety of topics. We encourage the children to use the Internet, with adult supervision, as another source for finding answers to their many questions.
