Homework:

Homework Homework is given as a reinforcement of daily learning. The Third Grade consistently requires homework four days a week (Monday-Thursday). We expect approximately thirty minutes of written work (mathematics, spelling, social studies, current events, journal writing) and thirty minutes of reading. The children may spend the thirty minutes of reading independently or they may read to a parent or have a parent read to them.

Each third grade student has a plan book which lists all of his/her assignments. Please check this plan book and sign it each night so that you will become familiar with homework assignments. We do feel it is important for a child to have a definite time and place at home for school-related work. Nevertheless, some students will require less time and some will require more time to complete written assignments. If a student completes written work quickly, we encourage that student to spend more time reading. We usually give no homework on Friday. There are occasions when a student may spend weekend time working on a long-term assignment such as a book report. We do expect the children to read on a daily basis including Saturday and Sunday.

Generally, we do not expect parents to help their children with their homework, but if parents want to be involved in checking assignments or listening to spelling words, we have no objection. The one homework assignment that may require some help, especially at the beginning of the year, is current events.

If a child is having difficulty with homework or is spending an inordinate amount of time completing homework assignments, please advise his/her teacher that the youngster needs further help with that concept in class. If you have any questions, calls should be made to the teacher at school rather than at home. However, if a youngster is very upset, please call at home so the problem can be solved in a timely fashion.

In an effort to improve communication between home and school, we invite you to view our third grade web page. We will strive to update information in a timely manner when there are changes we need to post .
