Abarat
is about Candy Quackenbush, who lives in a place in Minnesota,
called Chickentown. It was named that because of its massive
chicken slaughter industry.
One day during
school, Candy decides she has had enough. Her teacher sends
her to the principal's office because of her "lousy"
work. Instead of going down the hall to the office, she turns
the other way, and walks out of the school building and keeps
on walking. She soon finds herself on her way to the Islands
of Abarat in the Sea of Izabella. Candy travels with her new
friend, John Mischief who carries all of his seven brothers
on his head. In the Abarat, Candy finds out things few people
ever knew, meets people you couldn't even imagine, and encounters
enemies in the strangest shapes and sizes. In the Abarat,
Candy finds her true self and feels like she ís somewhere
finally, where she can be recognized for her talents and skills.
I like the way
Clive Barker is creative in making characters come to life
with humor, dullness, and even horror. Abarat is
definitely not a short novel, but it isn't a long one either
with 388 pages. This book is the first of the series and Abarat
2, the seque,l is coming out in the early Fall of 2004.
. If you are one of the people that like fantasy and adventure
books you certainly would like Abarat.
