All Alone in the Universe is a book about a girl named Debbie and her friend Maureen. Debbie has been best friends with Maureen since third grade. Just a couple days after school lets out Debbie sees Maureen hanging out with Glenna. Glenna is okay, but this surprises Debbie because she and Maureen never really liked her; so Debbie thinks it is a joke to see her with Maureen. However, Glenna starts to become best friends with Maureen, and is "hanging-out" with her. Maureen still thinks she is friends with Debbie, but Glenna tries to pull Maureen away from her. At the end of summer, Debbie and Maureen are no longer "hanging-out" together. It takes awhile for Debbie to get used to not having Maureen as a friend, but in the end she learns to make new friends.
