Call
Me Ruth is about a girl named Ruth who lives in Russia with her mother, and
grandparents. Ruths father lives in America and for eight years has been trying to
get tickets for his family to come join him. When the tickets come, Ruth gets very excited
because all of her life she has waited to go to America. She is also excited about meeting
her father for the first time.
When they arrive in America, they meet up with her father, and that is when the
adventure of misery, embarrassment, and unhappiness starts. After Ruths father dies,
Ruth and her mother have to live with her fathers family and her mother isnt
like herself anymore. It seems to Ruth that her mother is the most embarrassing person
that she has ever known. Some of the things that drive Ruth crazy are the way her mother
dresses, her union work, and refusal to learn English. In this story you will see how Ruth
lives with the embarrassment of her mother, and see how life in America is for Ruth and
her family.
This book tells how life was for Americans in a time when everyone from all over
the world was immigrating to America. I recommend this book to people who like history. It
doesn't take long to read, and it might make you think of your family history.
