Title:  The Hallowed Horse:  A Folktale from India
Author:  Demi
Reviewer:  Hirsh S. '11

This is a book for younger children from 2nd grade and under.

This book is about a kingdom in India, where an evil serpent is bound to come. The king knows that there is only one force that can defeat it, a hallowed horse. The king looks everywhere, but can't find one. But one man, who raises horses for a living, decides to sell horses at a market. On the way to the market, a mare has a pure white foal. This little foal slows the herd, and eventually stops it. Soon, everyone hears about the "terrible little, foal," except for one potter. That day, the potter comes by, and instead of the horse kicking him, or knocking him over, the foal gently licks his hand. The potter feels an attachment to the horse, and gets him. This clumsy foal turned out to be a kind, and intelligent horse.

Meanwhile, at the king's court, astrologers search, and search for the horse. As a last resort, they look into a crystal ball. Will they find the horse, and defeat Kaliya, the evil serpent? Read the book to find out!
