The Left-Handed
Shortstop
is about Walter, a fourth-grader whose teacher leaves half-way
through the year. For the rest of the year Walter's class
has a substitute teacher, Mr. Dengel. He makes a deal with
the class that if they beat the fifth-graders in a baseball
game they will not have homework on Fridays. One day when
leaving school the fourth-grader's starting shortstop falls
down the stairs and breaks his arm. Walter is asked to be
the new shortstop for the team. Walter's father tells him
that a shortstop cannot be left handed. Afraid that he will
let the team down, Walter wants to quit the team. He makes
a cast out of paper mache so that the team believes he is
injured.
To find out what happens to Walter and whether the fourth-graders
beat the fifth-graders, you will have to read the book. I
really liked this book, and I think that anyone who likes
baseball will also enjoy it. I rate this book a nine out of
ten.
