The book I read was called When The Soldiers
Were Gone by Vera W. Propp. This book was a true story about a
Jewish boy, Henk, whose parents gave him when he was a small baby to
another family during the time when Hitler was sending the Jews to
concentration camps. The book begins approximately eight year later
when Henk’s father calls him into the kitchen for a talk with a man
and a woman who Henk had never seen before. The father tells Henk
that he and his wife are not his biological parents; instead, the
strangers sitting in the kitchen are his real parents. The father also
tells him that his name is Benjamin, not Henk, and that he is Jewish.
If you read this book you will read about all the
troubles Benjamin’s family went through during
World War II. The story is also about his troubles as he adjusts to
his new family and neighborhood. I think this book is OK. It is
interesting but not very exciting. I would recommend this book to
people who like to read about war. I would also recommend it to
people who are interested in Jewish history.
