Stress for Success

Allison F.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the causes of stress and the techniques and behaviors used to stabilize stress. To carry out this experiment, seventy five "stress" surveys were distributed to seventy five children and teenagers. The seventy five completed surveys were collected. The results of these surveys were statistically analyzed according to the causes of stress and the techniques that were used to minimize stress. The results were then recorded.

After completing the experiment, the first and second sections of the survey were analyzed. In the first section of the survey, the six highest ranked causes of stress were noted. These included usually or always having stress related to academic difficulty (61%), academic pressure (59%), homework overload (57%), death of a family member (56%), receiving a report card (56%) and receiving a grade (52%).

In the second section, the six most common techniques used to minimize stress and the effects of stress on individuals were evaluated. These included experiencing fatigue (65%), using communication (53%), using exercise (47%), crying (45%), nail biting (45%), and yelling and cursing(45%). Stress can be a positive or a negative force in one's life depending on how it is managed. It was found that the utilization of techniques that minimize the causes of stress can lead to a more productive lifestyle.
