The Effect of Mother's Age on Term and Birthweight of Her Baby

Anusha B

The Purpose of this experiment was to see how the age of a mother affects the term and birthweight of her baby. To carry out this experiment, the ages of 25 mothers under prime age for preganency, 25 overprime age, and 25 prime age, and the term and birthweights of their babies were obtained from Allegheny University Hospitals, Bucks County Campus. The birthweights were tallied in categories of low birthweight, very low birthweight, and normal birthweight. The terms were tallied in categories of preterm, very preterm, and term. The terms and birthweights were counted in each category, and the percentages were found for each group.

It was found that older mothers are at a higher risk of delivering preterm, or very preterm, that the other two age groups are. It was also found that the younger than prime age mothers deliver babies which had low, or very low birthweight more often that the other two groups.
