To Disinfect or Not to Disinfect

E.coli Bacteria

The purpose of this project is to determine which disinfectant kills the most E. coli bacteria. T carry out this experiment eight agar dishes were swabbed with E. coli. Also eight disks were placed in an empty agar dish that contained the contents of one disinfectant. This was done for each disinfectant. The disks were then moved from the empty agar dishes and placed into the dishes containing E.coli. After 48 hours in an incubator the zone of inhibition was measured, in millimeters, using a metric ruler.

After completing this experiment, it was found that Lysol Deoderizing Cleaner had the largest zone of inhibition. Lysol Deodorizing Cleaner had the high average of 21.5 mm. Dow Anti-Bacterial Cleaner also had the high average of 14.8 mm. Clorox Clean -Up, having no zone on inhibition measurements, had the low average of 0 mm. This made Clorox Clean- Up the least effective in killing E.coli bacteria.
