Guardian Angel
(Project Number 406: Chemistry)
By Brandon A.

This science fair project was made to determine which of four (4) acids
would keep an apple from browning the longest period of time. The four acids
that were tested were Citric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Acetic Acid, and Salicylic
Acid. The control for the experiment was no acid at all on the apple. During
the experiment, many interesting results showed up, such results included
Sulfuric Acid, the most hazardous of the four acids, to "protect"
the apple the longest, averaging thirty-two (32) minutes. The way the acids
were tested was that an apple half was placed in a petri dish and covered
with one of the acids. Each acid was tested four times, including the control.
The end result was that the Sulfuric Acid protected the apple the longest,
Citric Acid the second longest, the Salicylic Acid the third longest, the
Acetic Acid the fourth longest, and the control the shortest amount of time.
