The Effects of Aromatherapy on Marigolds

By Elise H.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if marigold plants grow faster when exposed to different scents. Ninety-six marigold plants were placed in four aquariums (twenty-four in each) also in each aquarium an aromatherapy scent diffuser pad was placed. In one the pad was blank, in another ten drops of lemon essential oil was placed on the pad, in the third aquarium ten drops of lavender essential oil was put on the pad and in the last aquarium ten drops of peppermint essential oil is placed on the pad.

At the end of the experiment the lemon scent treated plants were the tallest (6.4 centimeters), next was the control at 5.7 centimeters, next the lavender scent treated marigolds at 5.1 centimeters and last the peppermint treated plants which all died. These results are the result of allelopathy. The different scents also called biomolecules or allalochemicals caused the marigolds to react the way they did.
