PERUVIAN KEYPAL PROJECT

THE TASK
Over the next two months , you will be corresponding with students from
the Colegio America in Callao, Peru. This is a private school with a long
history, similar to Germantown Academy, which celebrated its 106 anniversary
in October, 1997. The purpose of this project is for you to polish your
use of Spanish as you read and
write in the target language. You
will learn about the students, their school, their everyday lives, and their
aspirations. Hopefully this will bring you to a better understanding of
the global community. After the correspondance has ended, you are going
to make a composite page about the lifestyle, culture, customs of a typical
Peruvian student.
THE PROCESS
- You will be sending and receiving approximately four letters between
October 1 and December 15, 1997. These letters will be written half in
English and half in Spanish, to provide both groups with the opportunity
to practice their target language and to also read letters composed by
native speakers.
- All letters written and received will be forwarded to your teacher.
All letters written and received should be kept by you for future reference
in a mailbox designed for this purpose.
- All letters will be forwarded to members of your class.
- Germantown Academy students will send letters to Peru by September
29, October 13, October 27, November 10, 1997.
- The students of Colegio America will post letters by October 6, October
20, November 3, and November 17, 1997.
- This gives us 8 weeks for the entire project, four letters written
per class.
WHAT
YOU WILL LEARN
- You will become proficient in accessing your e-mail and your LAN account.
- You will become very comfortable in sending and replying to electronic
mail.
- You will create mailboxes, organize your mail, and create an address
book to facilitate sending messages.
- You will have the opportunity to read native, colloquial Spanish and
to practice your Spanish writing skills.
- This experience will allow you to get to know a young person from a
different cultural background. You will learn about their interests and
their aspirations with insight to how their culture has influenced these.
You will also get an opportunity to learn first hand about the educational
system, the local celebrations of major holidays and traditions significant
to Peru.

This cultural exchange project was developed by Maryanne
Boettjer, with technical support from Carol
Siwinski, for the Spanish 1-2 and 3-4 Honors classes at Germantown Academy.
