India is the seventh largest country in the world.Its Indian name is Bharat.More than one billion people live here, making its population the second highest in the world.

Because India is so large, it is a country of great contrast.India has a variety of climates.The northern areas of India have hot, dry summers and cold winters. India is known for her Monsoons.Monsoons are heavy downpour of rain between the months of June and September.In some areas it rains only two inches, and in some areas it rains more than 300 inches in a year.The temperature is very high in many areas and very low in a few.Some areas have springlike weather throughout the year.

India is famous for the mountains called Himalayas.This is the highest mountain range in the world.It is the only area in India that gets snow.India is known for its wildlife.Indiaís national animal is the tiger and its national bird is the peacock.India is also famous for Taj-Mahal. This beautiful monument is made out of marble.It was made in the memory of an emperorís wife.Taj-Mahal is located in the city of Agra.

There are 18 official languages in India. Mrs. Joshi speaks Marathi.Hindi is the official language of the government of India. India has 29 states. Delhi is the capital of India.The other major cities are Mumbai, Madras, and Calcutta.Mrs. Joshi comes from Pune.

Indian people love hot and spicy food.They enjoy many different sports.The most popular sport is cricket.One of Indiaís pastimes is MOVIES.They make over 750 movies each year.

India is a culturally rich country.It also uses modern technology.There are many universities that teach professions such as medicine, engineering, accounting, and teaching.India has made great progress in the computer field.

One of the biggest challenges India faces is its vast population.
