I have been studying the Mohawk people. I am going to tell you a little bit about them.
The Mohawk people had their own religion. They worshiped the Creator. They believed that all living things have spirits. They had ceremonial dances and singing. Hiawatha was the first Mohawk to believe in peace among the tribes.
They got their food by farming and hunting. They ate animals like fish and birds that the men caught. The women grew squash, corn, and potatoes in their fields. Some warriors were cannibals and they threw their dead enemies in pots and ate them.
They have no written language. The tribe started in the 16th century. They were a part of the Iroquois. They lived the northeastern part of America. They used wampum to remember their past.
The mothers of the clan were the leaders. They had councils to choose the chief. And they voted for only one chief. There were three clans who were called the wolf, the bear, and the turtle.
The Mohawk tribe lived together in villages, families lived in long houses.
They were hunter gatherers. They had a religion of their own and they passed on their history by telling stories.
