THE QUAKERS

By Jamie

The cultural event that I have been studying is the Quakers.

The Quakers are a religious group of people. The Quakers in England were founded by George Fox in 1652. The Quakers in Pennsylvania were founded by William Penn in 1681.

The Quakers had strong religious beliefs. They did not believe in fighting back towards each other even if it hurt the Quakers. They also believed that everyone has a little bit of God in them. They worshiped God by being thankful for everything they had. They prayed in their houses because they didn't think churches or synagogues were necessary to worship in. They grew crops in the fields. They used wheat to make their bread. Some of the foods they ate were corn, potatoes, meat, cranberries, and greens. They were grateful for their food and celebrated their food on Thanksgiving. The Quaker husband worked outdoors growing crops. The wife worked in the house cooking and cleaning. The children helped their parents with the cooking, cleaning, and the farming. They were under the same government as the other people living near them, but they refused to go to war and were conscientious objectors. They did not break any government laws except if the law was against their religion.

I enjoyed doing this project. It was very interesting to learn about the Quakers and how they lived. I liked to learn about them because they were very peaceful people.
