The Evil Serpent

By Andrew S.

Once upon a time, when the Earth was new, there were many magical creatures. Some of the creatures were dragons, phoenixes, serpents, tortoises, tigers and unicorns. At this time, there also lived a winged serpent named Shang. Shang was an all-black snake with two arms, two legs and two wings that were 15 feet from tip-to-tip. He also had a big green horn between his two horrific green eyes.

Shang lived on an island called Zooga. On Zooga, there weren't many things to do except eat and sleep. All day, Shang would travel around his island eating golden phoenix eggs. One day, Shang got restless. He wanted to venture to the far-off land of China where dragons and other creatures, that he had never seen before, lived.

"Oh, how much I would love to sink my teeth into the juicy center of the dragon eggs," Shang said.

He then stretched out his 15-foot-long wingspan and flew to China.

Life on Mainland China was peaceful and happy. All of the creatures got along perfectly and almost never fought. The rulers of the land were The Superior Dragon and his wife, The Superior Phoenix. Tragically, all of the members of The Superior Family died and the country was searching for a new Superior leader.

The two youngest dragons in the land were Yin and Yang. Yin, the girl dragon, was a dark red color and lived deep in a cavern in the earth. Yang, the boy dragon, who was a shiny golden color, lived on the top of the highest mountain. Yin and Yang would always compete to prove who had stronger magical powers.

Yin and yang were together with the rest of the creatures in the land, watching as the spirits of The Superior Dragon and his wife, The Superior Phoenix, rose to the sky above and become stars forever. All of a sudden, the serpent, Shang, flew over the crowd and everyone gasped. Everyone rushed into their homes. But Yin and Yang were still staring at the sky. The young dragons started following the path of the serpent, but quickly lost sight of it.

That night, Yin was still wondering about where the Serpent went, when she heard a scream. She rushed from her cave, to where the screams were coming from. They were coming from a young Phoenix's home. Shang had taken her eggs, but she was too scared to fight the serpent.

In the weeks to follow, many young, brave dragons, tigers and tortoise's tried to destroy Shang, but few even came back.

One night, Yang went down to Yin's cave. He said, "Yin, wake up! Let's go now! Together we can kill Shang. It will be much easier with two of us and just one of him."

"No, I'm too tired," said Yin.

"Exactly. Shang will also be tired and maybe even asleep," said Yang.

"O.K. Let's go," said Yin, as she yawned.

When Yin and Yang arrived at the cave where Shang was sleeping, they saw the bones of all of the dragons, tigers, tortoises and phoenix that had failed, lying around. Yin and Yang roared with terror and that roar woke up Shang.

"Shh!" Yin said to Yang.

Just as Yin said this, they saw Shang's glowing green eyes in the darkness of the cave. Yin tried to get past Shang, but Shang grabbed Yin and threw her to the back of the cave, where she laid unconscious.

Yang ran out of the cave and yelled, "Shang, come over here. I'll bet you can't beat me! You may have beaten Yin, but you can't beat me. I am too strong."

"I have killed the strongest dragons in China. You cannot beat me," Shang said. "I will rule all of China, and no one will stop me!"

Shang slowly walked step by step towards Yang. Yang saw Yin get up and stand in the back of the cave, behind Shang. Yin and Yang gazed into each other's eyes and together they said, "No, you won't."

Yin and Yang's magical powers together turned Shang into a column of jade. Yin and Yang walked through the forest and told all of the creatures what happened and how they had worked together to destroy Shang. The creatures were so exultant that they proclaimed Yin and Yang the new Superior Dragons of all China. Yin and Yang promised to each other, and all of China, that they will work together to bring peace and harmony to China as long as they lived. Yin and Yang buried the jade column deep in the cave and sealed the entrance of the cave for all eternity.

This is why the symbol of Yin and Yang together, represents peace and harmony.
