Monkey Defeats Water God
by Matt Shearon
Once upon a time the Water God as in a rage for no good reason. He was raging around in the waves when he saw a monkey climbing in the trees. With a devilish grin, the Water God yelled to the monkey, "Where do you live, Little Monkey?"
"I...I...I live in the f...f...forest. W...w...what do you w...w...want?" replied the scared monkey.
"I will destroy your home with my awesome tidal wave," snarled the Water God. And with this said, he dove into the water with a giant splash.
The Monkey was horrified. "Oh, what shall I do?" The monkey went to his tree house to think of a plan. "Should I run away or should I stand up and fight?" He thought for many hours.
Finally, he thought, "I will get other animals to help me. I could have Mighty Tree and his forest make a wall of vines to block the waves, and I will have Dirt Digger and his army of moles make mountains to block the waves." He was quite pleased with his plan and soon sprang off to put in into action.
Monkey went to find Mighty Tree, the largest tree in China. He climbed to the top of a mountain and looked all around until he saw a tree which seemed to climb into heaven. Its top branches were concealed above the clouds. He hurried to the base of the tree which he could not see very well because the canape is so thick it blocked the sun. He hollered to Mighty Tree, "Will you, please, make a wall of vines thick enough to withstand Water God's awesome tidal wave?"
"Why?" ask Mighty Tree.
"Because he wants to kill me with his tidal wave," said monkey.
Mighty Tree argued with monkey and said, "Why should I sacrifice my trees for one of your problems ?"
"It isn't just my problem. The Water God's tidal wave will kill us all," hollered monkey.
"Well, I guess what you say is true, but let me remind you if you are fibbing I will grind you into a rice patty," said the Mighty Tree. With this said, the monkey ran off to ask the Dirt Digger for help.
When he reached the meadow where Dirt Digger digs, he saw pure pandemonium. There were moles running and working everywhere. In the middle was Dirt Digger. Monkey could see why he was named Dirt Digger because there was a rain of dirt where he was digging. But digging dirt was much easier for him because he was as big as a horse. Monkey walked up to the hole were he was digging.
"Um, sir, can you stop so we can talk?" But Dirt Digger was already too far down in his hole to hear monkey. After several tries Dirt Digger can up.
"Whrat monkey want wit Dirt Digger?" mumbled the mole. Moles weren't very good at speaking because they could not hear the right pronunciation of the words underground.
"I would like to ask a favor of Dirt Digger," replied monkey.
"Weal, go ern than cen't wait al day," mumbled the mole.
"The water god has informed me that he is going to kill us all with his tidal wave, so I was going to ask you if you could make mountains to stop the tidal waves?" asked monkey.
"Weal, I gess me dint have manch choyse," mumbled the mole.
So the monkey, the tree, and the mole started to build their natural fortress. As they were building, the water god was making his own plans. He would surprise them by traveling under water. Then, when he was close enough to the shore, he would spring up out of the water and let them have it.
As the days went by both of the teams were ready for battle. When the water god was on his way, the animals knew that he was coming because they sent out fish to let them know before hand. When the fish told the animals that the water god was coming, all the animals were ushered behind their fortress so that they would be safe. They all braced for impact as the water god launched his tidal wave against them, but the water god had another think coming. The wall of vines acted like a sling shot and shot back the massive amount of water at the water god. He was carried away, but he came back with a tremendous wave. A wave that was as high as the clouds. But the moles had made their mountain just a few inches higher and the wave just bounced off of the mountain. As the water crashed against the mountain, some got over and started a large flood. Only a few souls were lost. As the animals got to high land, it turned out that the water god had the largest problem of all. The waves bounced off the mountain and started to chase the water god. The water god totally forgot about the animals and his bad mood in his mad run to get away from the waves.
The animals cheered for monkey.
"Who would have thought a little monkey could save the land," laughed Mighty tree, in his relief.
"But it wasn't just me. It was all of you who saved us. See how powerful we are if we work together," said monkey.
And from then on, monkey sat on his throne at the top of Mighty Tree.
