Fairy Tale

Rob H.

Once upon a time, there was a greedy Emperor named Hong. He wanted everything valuable. The only thing that he didn't have was immortality. He was so greedy that one day he decided that he wanted to be immortal, too. He ordered his servants to find the sacred rabbit. This was talked about in Chinese lore. According to legend, if you took the rabbit's paw you would become immortal. The servants went into the woods and looked for many moons. Servants came back with many rabbits, but none of them were the sacred rabbit. The emperor was getting mad.

"Do I have to do everything myself?" he screamed to one of his servants.

"Please, please sire, let me have one more chance," begged the servant.

"All right. Go and don't come back without the sacred rabbit!" screamed the Emperor.

Then, one day, a servant brought a rabbit and it was the sacred rabbit.

"This is it! This is the sacred rabbit! Guards! Guards! Come here at once and lock this rabbit up to be executed tomorrow!" screamed the Emperor with delight in his voice.

The Emperor knew this was the sacred rabbit because in the folklore it stated that the rabbit had an imprint of a dragon on its paw. The Dragon god, Han, was watching. He was getting angry and in that night took the sacred rabbit to a far away place where no one could get his paw. It was a place of pure happiness.

Two of the emperor's guards, Cong and Wong-fu, saw the dragon flying away with the rabbit. Cong shouted at Wong-fu, "Look at what you did! We're going to be in so much trouble with Emperor Hong!"

"It wasn't my fault!" Wong-fu yelled back.

All the time that they were yelling, Han was taking the sacred rabbit to the secret place.

The guards went yelling to the Emperor to tell him what had happened. The Emperor ordered them to check the cage for the sacred rabbit, but all they found was a ball of rolled up bed sheets.

Han returned from the secret place and had banished Emperor Hong from the kingdom. Han brought a new emperor who was not greedy and who was concerned about his people.
