Augustus vs. Antony
After Caesar died, Antony and Augustus fought his assassins and won. Although Caesar left the power to Augustus, he and Marc Antony fought for the supreme power. Another thing that provoked the battle was the fact that Marc Antony clearly favored Cleopatra's power over Rome's because of their love affair. Augustus realized this and thought that Antony wasn't being faithful to Rome. Many of the other leaders thought Augustus was not going to be able to rule Rome. However, Augustus was very capable, and showed it. He had a large army and fleet of ships following him, and he became powerful. The battle between Antony and Augustus was fought at Actium, on September 3, 31 BCE. Augustus won that battle, virtually destroying all Antony's fleet. Later, Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide because of anticipated humiliation. After conquering Antony, Augustus considered himself "master of all things." It was then that the triumvirate came to an end, and the Roman government changed to another government system including one ruler and domestic reform.
