Rome's Reaction
When Rome heard this news, one of the consuls, L. Calpurnius Bestia, was assigned Numidia as an area of operation. In 120 Bestia and Scaurus invaded Jugurtha's land. Soon the two sides made an agreement which was very restrictive to Jugurtha's privileges. When Rome found out about this agreement, there were many accusations of bribery. They sent him to capture Jugurtha and he did not do anything serious to him. Jugurtha was brought to Rome to stand before the judge and tell of all the men whom he had bribed. Before revealing this information, he received a pardon from politicians who were on his side. As Jugurtha was going to leave Italy, he had an assassination arranged for one of his cousins who had taken over his throne in his absence. The assassination was discovered, and Jugurtha's part in this was revealed.
