Senate's Decision and Jugurtha's Reaction

The Roman Senate was torn between whom they should believe and to whom they should give the kingdom. Jugurtha had many of the senators bribed with gold, but the ones who would not accept bribes voted against Jugurtha. Finally, the decision was reached that the kingdom would be divided again.

It was not long before Jugurtha attacked Adherbal's kingdom. A commission was sent to Jugurtha telling him that he had better stop his attack. Jugurtha ignored this and continued his attack on Adherbal. In Cirta, Adherbal's capitol, Jugurtha had his army attack Adherbal. Adherbal counted on the Italians who were with him to offer defense. Another commission that was headed by M. Aemilius Scaurus was sent to Jugurtha, and it commanded him to come to Africa. Jugurtha again ignored it and continued his relentless attack. The Italian defenders finally gave in causing Adherbal's surrender. Jugurtha then tortured Adherbal to death and also killed the Italians.
