THE STORY OF THE CROWN

During the peak of Archimedes's career, he worked for Hiero II. Hiero had recently bought a new crown from the local goldsmith. Hiero thought that the goldsmith had cheated him by mixing in silver, a cheaper metal. Hiero asked Archimedes to look over the crown to tell him if the crown was pure gold or not. Archimedes thought about how he would tell if the crown was gold. He did not know how he would determine this. One day while he was in the bathtub, he saw the water rush out of the tub when he got into the tub. The water was displaced by his mass. This is how he created the theory of buoyancy. Once he discovered the principle, Archimedes ran throughout the town naked screaming, "Eureka, I've found it!!" To see if the crown was pure gold, he placed the crown into a tub, and then measured how much water was displaced by it. Next, he did the same for a piece of solid gold that was the weight that the crown was supposed to be. The pure gold displaced more water than the crown. He then told the king that the crown was not made of true and pure gold, and that the goldsmith had cheated Hiero II

Archimedes was one of the smartest people ever to grace the earth. If Archimedes had not lived, we may not have had the knowledge in many fields, such as math and science, which we know right now.
