After Cleopatra was named queen, she was forced to marry her youngest brother, Ptolemy XIV, only 11 years old at the time. After a joint government system was arranged, Cleopatra went to Rome. There, she lived as Caesar's mistress and gave birth to a son named Caesarion. The Romans were offended by her vulgarity. However, in 44 BC, Caesar was assassinated by his senators, who thought that he was planning to make himself king. Cleopatra returned to Egypt. Caesar had not mentioned Cleopatra or Caesarion in his will, and Cleopatra felt threatened upon her return to Egypt. Cleopatra had her consort killed and Caesarian, only two years old at the time, was made her co-official. Cleopatra had much to contend with upon her return to Egypt. There were plagues and famines.
Cleopatra could not decide which side to favor during the civil war in Rome that followed Julius Caesar's death. Because of this, Mark Antony wanted to meet with her and talk about her position. The two fell in love, and Mark Antony returned to Egypt with Cleopatra. In the spring of 40 BC, Mark Antony left Cleopatra and returned to Rome. Antony's wife, Fulvia, became ill and died. Antony then married Octavia. She was beautiful and intelligent, and had also just lost her companion. Cleopatra had given birth to twins, a boy and a girl and Octavia gave birth to a girl. All three were Antony's children.
