His oratorical skills made him one of the finest speakers of his age, and even Cicero admired his style, wit and vocabulary. He wrote poetry, and his famous commentaries on war, The Civil War and The Gallic Wars, reflect his instinct for war, his bravery, his ability to take immediate action, and the devotion of his men that enabled him to win so many victories against all odds.
In 44 B.C. , Caesar, likening himself to Alexander the Great, imposed restrictions on the Senate and Assembly, and fearing that he would become an absolute king, a title that theRomans despised, many conspired to murder him. On March 15, 44 B.C. a group of angry senators, lead by
Brutus and Cassius, assassinated him.

Julius Caesar changed the course of history for the Greco- Roman world. He was an extremely influential and talented man in the arts, political and military arena. He aroused great loyalty but his immense ambition and disregard for the Republican traditions was his downfall. His death began a period of brutal civil wars and power struggles that were inherited by his adopted son and heir, the future Augustus.
