Archimedes

287-212 B.C.

One of the great Greek mathematicians and scientists, Archimedes was a Syracusan. He is most famous for his discovery of the principle of water displacement, over which he exclaimed "Eureka!"--"I found it!". Because he lived in Syracuse, an important Greek colony in Sicily, he found himself involved in the conflict between Rome and Carthage known as the Punic Wars. He was instrumental in defending Syracuse from Roman invasion.
