Jugurtha

A powerful North African king, Jugurtha resisted the spread of the Roman's Empire in a war that lasted six years, from 112 to 105 B.C. Jugurtha was a skilled politician as well as a successful general, which he demonstrated in his own rise to power as King of Numidia as well as in his conflict with Rome. In the end, he was captured by the Romans not in battle, but through the treachery of his own son-in-law, whom the Romans has intimidated and bribed.

*The portrait on this coin is not of Jugurtha, but Micipsa, his uncle and predecessor on the throne of Numidia; the picture gives an idea of Numidian coin portraits.
