Caius Marius

157-86 B.C.

Marius hailed from a town north of Rome, and was of plebeian stock. Because of his "low" birth, he was a constant foe of the patrician class throughout his career. Marius rose to prominence in Rome through the military as a phenomenally successful general who reorganized the makeup of the Roman army. He conducted successful campaigns against invading Germans and against King Jugurtha of Numidia. Ultimately, he clashed with his rival and former lieutenant Sulla, and the result was four years of civil war followed by another four years of bloody purges by Sulla after Marius' death.
