Scipio Africanus Maior

 

237-183 B.C.

Scipio hailed from one of the great patrician families of ancient Rome--the Cornelii. His cognomen Africanus was given to him for his service during the Second Punic War. As general, he successfully invaded Carthage, forcing the recall of Hannibal from Italy and saving Rome from defeat. He defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202 B.C.
