Septimius Severus

Ruled 193-211 A.D.
After the overthrow of Commodus,
the son of Marcus Aurelius,
Septimius Severus established the last major Roman dynasty for many years
to come. Born in North Africa, Septimius made his fame as a general in the
army, and continued to be more interested in military than civil affairs
when he took over the Empire. His wife Domna, from Syria, presided over
a major group of scientists, artists, and philosophers, including the famous
physician Galen. One of his principle architectural contributions to the
city was his Arch of Septimius Severus, commemorating his victory over the
Parthians. After the end of the Severan dynasty in 235, fifty years of anarchy
under twenty different emperors followed until Diocletian restored order in 284.
