PIGS!

In first grade, we read wordless picture books. After reading the book Tuesday, by David Wiesner,we wondered if pigs really can fly. We decided to learn more about pigs in 1-V. We read fiction and non-fiction books, used the computers, and wrote poems - all about pigs. Some of the facts we learned are:

  • A pig can live over 15 years.
  • They can weigh up to 2,000 pounds.
  • A good coating of mud protects a pig.
  • Pigs can smell food underground.
  • Pigs do not eat like pigs!

One of our favorite things was an in-school field trip to Mrs. Rubenfield's pig collection in the Middle School. She must have over one hundred pigs! Please click on our names below to view our pigs we drew using KidPix on the computer. Then we used describing words to tell you about our pig.

In an assembly, we shared our writing and recited the following poem in front of our Lower School classmates and teachers. We held up the puppets we made with the curly tails!

The Pig's Tail, by Norman Ault

A furry coat has the bear to wear,

The tortoise a coat of mail,

The yak has more than his share of hair

But - The pig has the curly tail.

The elephant's tusks are sold of gold,

The slug leaves a silver trail,

The parrot is never too old to scold,

But - The pig has a curly tail.

The lion can either roar or snore,

The cow gives milk in a pail,

The dog can guard a door, and more,

But - The pig has a curly tail.

For the rest of the beasts that prey,

From the tiny mouse to the whale,

There's much more that I could say today,

But the pig has a curly tail.
