Cougar

Cougars have small heads and long necks. Cougars have low-slung bodies and long thick tails. A cougar’s fur is usually gray or brown, with white underneath. Male cougars weigh about 160 pounds. Females weigh 90 to 135 pounds.

The cougar babies are called cubs. A mother cougar usually has three or four spotted kittens, or cubs. They are born blind in a cave or some other hiding place. The spots disappear late during the kitten’s first year.

Cougars live from Northern Canada through the United States, Central America, and into Argentina. They live in the forest or brushland, grassland, or semi-desert.
Cougars like to eat deer and moose.

Cougars are predators. They will eat almost any animal they can catch.

Cougars have fine hearing and eyesight and a good sense of smell. Thanks to long hind legs, cougars can jump extremely well. All of this helps them to stay away from danger.
People have feared, hated, and even loved cougars. Cougars are also known as mountain lions or pumas.

A note about process:
In first grade students are introduced to the research process. The first step in research is fact finding. At this step students are learning to identify facts and to match facts to the questions they answer. First grade students are not expected to interpret the facts and they are not required to put the facts into their own words. This is why you will see statements that are copied directly from the resources used.
