The Hyena I learned information about the hyena. Its back slopes down. The front legs are longer than the back legs. It can be brown, gray, or yellow. It can be striped or spotted. Hyenas can weigh from 82 to 190 pounds. They are about 4 feet long. The hyena lives on the continents of Africa and Asia. They live in grasslands and scrub. Hyenas eat dead animals such as zebras, birds, antelopes and lizards. They also eat fruit sometimes. The female hyena has one to five babies at once. Baby hyenas are called pups. The pups weigh three pounds at birth. They are born underground to keep them safe from lions and jackals. Zebras, antelopes, lizards, and birds are prey for the hyena. Hyena will also eat meat of animals that have been killed by lions, cheetah, and leopards. Hyenas can protect themselves by running away. They are fast runners. They also protect themselves by their laugh. Hyenas can run 35 miles an hour. A group of hyena is called a clan. Hyenas are scavengers. They eat other dead animals. Sometimes hyenas can be dangerous. They have killed people. I found my information in several different places. Stone, Lynn M, Hyenas, Rourke Corporation, Inc. Vero Beach, Florida, 32964, 1990.
