Animal Friends Wintertime is hunting season in First Grade. Hunting for facts that is. Our Animal Friends theme is an excellent time to introduce research, resourse materials, and non-fiction books.
The girls and boys start by finding simple facts
about wild and domestic animals. Each student then selects a particular animal. With the
support of a teacher or a parent volunteer, the children hunt for information about the
animal's habitat, food, babies, and its status as a predator or prey. Library books,
encyclopedias and web pages offer a wealth of
facts. The information is then compiled in to an illustrated report.
Our reading then takes our hunt to far parts of the globe as we run with Balto, The Bravest Dog in the World, or explore the jungles of India with The Magic Treehouse: Tigers at Twilight. The true story of Balto helps us learn new reading skills while treking across the arctic with the sled dogs. Tigers at Twilight is an exciting combination of fact and fantasy that provides wonderful literary elements as well as a wealth of information about wildlife in India.
