Predictable Books

Predictable books offer first graders the opportunity to read literature that contains:

  • A repetitive pattern (words, phrases, sentences, or story structure)
  • Rhyme and/or rhythm
  • A familiar story
  • Common story patterns.

Stories such as I Was Walking Down the Road by Sarah E. Barchas follows the journey of a young girl as she picks up creatures she finds along the way. Repetitive sentences and rhymes make this an enjoyable adventure for all readers. Ask Mr. Bear by Marjorie Flack follows the main character, Danny, on his search for a birthday gift for his mother. Each animal he encounters suggests just the right gift. Mr. Bear offers an idea that all children can appreciate.

Students gain confidence in their abilities as they enjoy literature that frequently has long been part of the repertoire of children's literature.
