Affective education enters into the first grade program daily as the children learn to work together, to be aware of their own and of each other's feelings, and to resolve conflicts. Most lessons are taught informally as situations arise. Recess time and throughout the day there are opportunities to open a dialogue about acceptable behavior and the consequences for not following these established guidelines. Books, guest speakers, and assemblies provide means for discussing appropriate expression of feelings, manners, sportsmanship, and cooperation.
