Learning about Money:

a visit from Commerce Bank

On March 1, two representatives from Commerce Bank visited first grade to present the Commerce WOW!Zone financial education program.
Mr. Gregory Rink and Mr. A.J. Masko discussed with the students the importance of saving their money and why a bank is a good place to keep it.

They then put pictures of coins in the proper order from the penny to the dollar. After discussing the advantages of saving money in a bank account, including the ability to earn interest, the children listed other things that they like to save such as sports cards or Beannie Babies. Finally, those who chose to save the plastic coin passed out at the beginning of the lesson were rewarded with the “interest” of getting to select two prizes from the box. They learned that saving money has real benefits!

Our presenters also reviewed interesting facts about how the bank runs and the vault inside it, how money is made at the mint, the new state quarters and what is done with old paper money. The first graders all received additional puzzles and a booklet to help them practice their new understanding of money. They also received a certificate for their participation in the program.
