Popcorn Math

During their study of place value, first graders try to identify numbers by tens and ones. To assist in their understanding of this concept the students began by reading the story, Popcorn, by Frank Asch.

After hearing about Sam Bear’s “popcorn party,” they had one of their own. Using a place value placemat, they separated their kernels into groups of tens and individual ones.

After working with the kernels, they got to eat their own popcorn, just like Sam Bear’s guests did!
