Cuisenaire Rods
Math Manipulatives

In the first grade one of the tools the children use when dealing with numbers is the Cuisenaire Rods. They are a set of ten gauged blocks. The white rod is one centimeter in size and they graduate to the orange rod which is ten centimeters long.

One of the first activities that the children do with the rods is just to "build" with them.

Students are able to grasp increasingly abstract mathematical concepts through open-ended hands-on projects:

  • patterning
  • addition and subtraction
  • fractions
  • size relationships
  • spatial problem solving
  • symmetry
