Heart Bingo Valentine Math During the week of Valentine’s Day the children played Heart Bingo. The children were given 18 markers (red, white and pink M & M’s). First they had to count how many of each color they got. Then they were asked if the number of the different color M & M’s was odd or even.
We discussed how many possible ways there are to score Bingo. There were five rows across and 5 columns down plus two possible diagonal wins for a total of 12. As the numbers were called the child who had that number on his or her card had to tell whether the number was odd or even and how many tens and ones there were in the number.
When some numbers were called the children had to solve math problems to figure out what the number was. For example, the number is the same as 5 dimes and 4 pennies, what is the number when the minute (big) hand is on the 3, or 4 groups of 4. It was wonderful to see how quickly the children were able to solve these word problems in their heads.
At the end of the game the children got to take the markers home to enjoy and celebrate Valentine’s
