The social studies curriculum varies from year to year with the exception of the health and nutrition unit that is taught each spring. We usually pick a current event, a country, or a continent to study in depth. On occasion, all the grades in the Lower School may work on a common theme. Special attention is given to holidays, famous people, and safety. Scholastic News generates other social studies topics.

The first grade visits a retirement home several times each year to present brief assemblies for our senior citizen friends highlighting the areas we have been studying.

During the year the children also study nutrition. This unit is enhanced by a visit from a food nutritionist who offers an informal interactive program centered on the concept of the food pyramid.
