Second grade children have art twice a week. The emphasis at the primary group level is in the development of confidence and enjoyment in creative expression. A variety of skills and concepts is taught and reinforced during the primary years and the children are given opportunities to learn how to work productively in small groups as well as independently.
Primary children are exposed to work by a
variety of artists through stories, videos, and visual aides.
The primary art classes also visit several gallery exhibits in
our Arts Center Gallery each year. They are encouraged to voice
opinions about the work that they are viewing and asked to do
some critical thinking and interpretation about the art they see.
During their years in the primary art program students learn
about basic col
or and elements of design. They
have extensive experience in methods and collage, drawing, painting,
printmaking, clay, and various construction activities using a
wide range of mediums and techniques.
Many of our classes are project oriented, but there is also a strong emphasis on process. Children are often encouraged to experiment with materials as a vehicle for learning. Responsible use of class time is encouraged and monitored. The children in art classes are encouraged to work quietly and productively. The tone of primary classes is relaxed and comfortable. The hope is that everyone feels free to explore their own creative potential without fear of failure or feelings that their efforts will not be appreciated.
Primary art is displayed in the Lower School art rooms, in the Lower School hallways, and in the Lower School office reception area. There are two student art exhibits held in the Arts Center Gallery each year... one in December and one in May. All students will have some of their art work displayed in one of the listed areas each year. All work is returned to students by the end of the school year.
Art reports are sent to parents three times a year for second graders.
