Our language arts program intertwines reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Our themes are interdisciplinary in nature, promoting the development of effective reading and writing skills while encouraging artistic expression and creativity.
As we teach students at Germantown Academy to read, we strive to develop and sustain their enthusiasm for reading. Our goal is to foster the desire, as well as the skills and strategies, that will give our students increasing knowledge, expanding interests, life-long enjoyment of literature, and an appreciation of reading.
In second grade, the children meet in small groups according to needs and abilities. These groups are flexible, so students are not "locked" into one type of grouping for all reading classes. The reading level of each student is assessed in order to provide appropriate reading instruction and materials. Instruction is designed to recognize and capitalize on each child's strengths and learning style. Trade books are used extensively in second grade and texts are selected to enhance the various themes explored throughout the year. Quiet reading is scheduled on a daily basis. Children enjoy weekly visits to the library to check out books. The librarian also provides instruction in library skills.

Writing skills are taught within the context of the children's written work. Much of the writing is generated from the second grade themes. Expository writing skills are developed through various information reports related to the themes. A myriad of opportunities for creative and narrative writing encourage expression of personal feelings and ideas. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and character and plot development are integral components of the writing process. Initial drafts may undergo several revisions before reaching final draft status. Teachers confer with students on an individual basis. Opportunities for peer conferencing exist as well. Students share their finished pieces with their peers, and time is provided for positive feedback.
Manuscript writing is practiced throughout the school year. Cursive writing is introduced mid-year.

Formal spelling begins in second grade. Children are given a list of spelling words to practice each week. These words are selected from a list of "priority words" (high frequency words), thematic words, and from a child's own writing.
Teachers instruct and encourage effective speaking and listening skills throughout the year, always keeping in mind the developmental maturity levels of the students. Children are encouraged to express themselves and to share their feelings, experiences, and their work with peers. Teachers attempt to empower the children to feel good about themselves and the work they do, and to feel confident in the expression of ideas.
