The mathematics
program
stresses the understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts, provides exposure
to new concepts, and encourages creative thinking. In order to achieve these
goals, the children use a wide variety of manipulative materials. Problem-solving
strategies are developed using the four-step mode of 1) think 2) plan 3) solve
and 4) look back. Concepts and skills may be presented and reinforced at various
times of the day, not just at "math time," to help students realize
the connection of math to "real life."
Concepts and skills are presented to students through large and small group instruction, cooperative learning groups, board work, and hands-on activities. Math activities are often incorporated into thematic units. Students practice skills in consumable workbooks, on
worksheets, and through games, class projects, homework assignments, computer software, and online programs.
By the end of second grade students will be expected to: write the answers to 100 addition facts with sums up to 18 in 5 minutes, write the answers to 100 subtraction facts with minuends up to 18 in 6 minutes, know the multiplication tables for 2, 5, and 10, and add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers without regrouping. Other concepts, such as, multiplication, division, fractions, measurement, and word problems are studied at varying degrees of exposure and practice with manipulatives. Enrichment topics and special projects are explored as time and
students’ abilities permit.
The Math Coordinator is available to work with individuals, small groups, or a whole class. A teacher from the Intermediate Unit works with youngsters who qualify for extra math support.
