The second grade consists of three self-contained classrooms, with a maximum of eighteen children per class. The year is divided into three terms: fall, winter, and spring. Our academic units are thematic, interdisciplinary studies that encourage children to make connections from one subject area to another and from one theme to another.

As teachers, we value and respect the uniqueness of each child. We recognize that children may be at various stages developmentally, and we strive to tailor our program to fit their needs. Confidence is the basic building block upon which skills are developed. We endeavor to help children gain a sense of themselves that allows them to appreciate their strengths while gaining some understanding of their weaknesses. Children's efforts are applauded as well as their accomplishments.

Our teaching requires that students are active learners. We believe that active participation leads to discovery and internalization. Collaborative endeavors are encouraged, as children seek solutions to problems. Children learn that several different strategies may be employed in order to arrive at a solution. The growth and development of independent work skills is promoted as well. We work with children to develop basic skills as well as a spirit of inquiry. We hope to instill a love for learning.

Opportunities for social interaction are important for children, and we expect children to treat each other with kindness. Social-emotional growth is as important as academic growth, and our curriculum reflects this philosophy. We take time on a regular basis to discuss ways we can be better classmates, friends, and citizens.

As teachers, we hope to make second grade a positive and memorable experience for all children.
