Colonial Market Museum: Candlemaker
Hello! My name is Grace. I am a candle maker. I am working on a couple of candles. First I have to make a wick by braiding cotton thread. Next I have to make a fire. Then I put beeswax into the pot. Next I dip the wick into the pig fat, wax or bees wax until the wick is coated. Last, I put the candle back in the wax again and again until the candle is the thickness I want. The hardest part of making candles is getting the bees wax because the bees might sting me!
Hello! My name is Mary and I am a candle maker. I am making candles. First I have to take this string called a wick. Next, I have to dip it into hot tallow. Tallow is animal fat. Then, I have to take the wick out of the tallow and wait a few seconds for the tallow to cool off. I have to keep taking the wick out and putting it back in until I think the candle is thick enough to put out to sell. In colonial times, candles came in many different thicknesses.
