HOW TO BE A: Blacksmith

MATERIALS:

A forge ( a raised brick hearth or fireplace),

bars of wrought iron

hammers

anvil

bellows

a slice (a rake used to rake coals)

a washer ( a pail of water )

and tongs

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat a piece of wrought iron in the fireplace until burning hot.

2. Use the bellows to keep the fire going (bellows blow air.)

3. If the burning hot coals get on the floor, use the slice.

4. When the wrought iron is hot enough, place it on the anvil by using the tongs.

5. Hammer the wrought iron into shape.

6. Use the washer to put the fire out.

USES FOR:

The Blacksmith makes knives, horseshoes, hooks, hide scrapers, hoes, rakes, nails, axes, cowbells, locks, and decorative wrought iron. Hoes and rakes are used in the garden. Horseshoes and cowbells are used for animals. Axes chop things. Knives cut. Nails are used to build. Locks, hidescrapers, and hooks are used around the house. People that are very rich have decorative wrought iron.
